Iná-rei
{Een-ah-ray}

The Iná-rei are neither human nor animal, they're something between. Some might even compare them to Gods that were once displayed in old world religions.

They were however at one point hunted to near extinction by certain other species in particular places, and as such they've kept themselves under the radar until recently. They have found home and acceptance in the mortal plane. So long as they do their due part in keeping the Other at bay.

The Iná-rei don't really dislike other species, though they understand that others might not particularly trust them.

Starting Age Range

Recommended Starting Ages

50 - 400 [While these creatures live forever and don't age past their prime (unless illness gets them or someone kills them) they generally don't venture out before 50 years of age. It's too risky to do so.]

Types

Hare

Rabbits, Gophers, Pika and Hares all fall under this family of the Iná-rei, they're possibly the most common, as such however they were one of the first groups of Iná-rei to end up being hunted to near extinction.

These Iná-rei seem to get along with the Fae and are welcome in the Fae lands.

Rodent

Mice, Rats, Squirrels, and more, there's a vast variety of rodent like Iná-rei, they tend to stick to smaller groups unless it's large family get togethers, in which case they'll pick and choose their locations based on how dense the human population is.

These Iná-rei along with the Hares seem to get along with the Fae and are welcome in the Fae lands.

Canine

Foxes, Wolves, Jackals, Dingo's, Even Hyenas, any canine falls under the category of Iná-rei.

Most of the time they're pack animals, sometimes they're not but they place value in any relationships and bonds they form and are often the most loyal of friends. Some might try and play 'Alpha' male or female, all they need is to be put in their place and they should learn it's not all about being leader.

Feline

Cats, cats and more cats, they all fall under this family.

Often solitary creatures you won't find two hunting in the same grounds unless they're a couple or family. They do make good allies but can and will sometimes stab you in the back if it benefits them.

They aren't evil, just more along the lines of chaotic neutral. So long as you're on their good side or paying the highest price, they'll back you up.

Reptiles

Lizards and snakes of all kinds fall under this. They are the business men and women of the Iná-rei.

They have minds for it and often high intellect. The only problem is that some of them let their pride and ego get the better of them.

They also have a nasty mean streak, if crossed they can be rather venomous where their actions are concerned.

Other

Arachnid type creatures, that are half spider and half person, along with scorpion, part frog, mink, ferrets, birds, otters and even more human looking but with enough animal traits to make them uncanny for normal humans would fall in to the other category.

Anything that does not fall in to the above categories falls under this.

Misconceptions

They're all tricksters!

Contrary to popular belief about the Iná-rei, most are not actually tricksters, they're just trying to live like everyone else.

Associated with different elements

The Iná-rei are in no way, shape, or form any kind of elemental creature, nor are there different kinds of Iná-rei for different elements.

Can transform into anything

While they do have glamours that's all they are, a glamour and are only of a human looking person, they cannot transform in to other animals, or objects unless they have learned a spell to do so and in this case anyone can do that if they've the magical prowess.

They store luck in their ears, feet or tails

This is HIGHLY incorrect and is sometimes the reason why some of the Iná-rei are poached / hunted! It's a terrible misconception that needs to be abolished but it stems from superstitions.

Ideals & Beliefs

The Iná-rei have two rules that they follow.

FOLLOW THE INÁ-REI TREATY

This is a treaty between all Iná-rei that allows them to co-exist, they aren't supposed to kill one another. This rule is only broken when one is attacking first or is working for forces that would cause harm/extinction.

DROP A GLAMOUR AROUND THOSE WHO'RE TRUSTED

If they are hunting with people and have been hunting with people for a long time, so long as they trust them, they will show their real selves to their hunting allies. After which, so long as they are in the company of one or two of those allies they can drop the glamour completely and simply be their true selves.

Someone owes the Reptile three large favours and a small favour, debts to be repaid. They can be cashed in at any time. You may use two large favours combined to make one favour of any size.

It doesn't matter when but once these have been completely cashed in there will be no more 'You Owe Me's. The name and reason for the NPC owing a favour must be decided during creation.

Here are some examples of reasons why:-

  • Got someone out of jail.
  • Saved a family member while on a hunt.
  • Saved their life from some horrible situation.
  • Monetarily got someone on their feet.
  • Helped teach the NPC to hunt.

Other - They Know me! [Reputation]

This character is well known in a 'city' or 'country' of a realm. They get special privileges while there, such as free food, drink, bed and board.

They are welcome there, discuss with your DM the reason as to why and where.

Here are some ideas/examples:-

  • They're known on an island in the Mortal Plane because they helped lead the charge to push out the Other which was threatening to swallow that island permanently.
  • They've saved a leaders daughter/son/family member from a Rift that opened and the creatures within said rift.
  • They helped fund a Hunters Organization in a city which has had knock on benefits for all hunters in that area.
  • They defeated some big creature with the help of a team, now all of that team are hailed as heroes as they stopped massive city wide damage and death from happening.
